Looking For Cheap Renters Insurance?
From Miami to Orlando, Tampa to Fort Lauderdale, Florida abounds with bustling cities that are perfect for renters. Of course, there's one roommate you should always move in with: renters insurance.
Having renters insurance in Florida can help protect your belongings from damage and theft, pay medical bills if guests are injured in your place, and cover liability expenses if you're caught in a lawsuit. And in the unthinkable case that your abode is damaged by, say, a fire or tornado, renters coverage can even help put you up elsewhere while repairs are made.
There are four types of coverages that you can customize on your renters HO4 policy.
Each coverage has a minimum and maximum coverage amount (commonly referred to as "coverage limit"). Renters Insurance is also known as an HO-4 policy and is protection for your personal property within the rental. Your personal belongings are typically not covered by the owner’s insurance policy.

Best Renters Insurance Rates in Florida: by City
Depending on where you live in Florida, from Miami with its frequent storms to the relative calm of Jacksonville, your yearly rate can change a lot. We take a deeper look at some cities in the Sunshine state below.
Renters Insurance in Miami
In Miami, renters insurance is generally much higher than in other parts of the state. The large city, which is always under threat of a tropical storm or hurricane in the summer and fall, but also has a good deal of theft, makes rates here a bit more expensive. Even State Farm charges about $443 per year in Miami. The most affordable company is actually GEICO who gave us a rate of $344 per year.
Renters Insurance in Jacksonville
In Jacksonville, renters insurance is significantly cheaper than in Miami. Like in the rest of the state, you can get your best rate at State Farm, followed by Progressive, Esurance and then GEICO. The city average between those four companies is $295 per year.
Renters Insurance in Orlando
Orlando is another city in Florida that is generally safe from the damaging storms that plague the south of the peninsula. As a result, rates are generally inexpensive with State Farm offering a cheap insurance quote for less than $200 per year.
Renters Insurance in Tampa, FL
The city in Tampa Bay off Florida’s Gulf Coast has a population of roughly 350,000 residents. It was included in the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819, along with the rest of the Florida peninsula, and the U.S. soon after built a fort in what is now downtown Tampa. Today, the downtown has undergone significant redevelopment and the city is home to a thriving group of theaters and the arts. Renters insurance in Tampa is some of the cheapest in the state, according to our study. State Farm quotes were around $245 per year, while GEICO quotes for the sample property we researched were $311.
Renters Insurance in Tallahassee, FL
The capital of the state of Florida has more than 181,000 residents but its metropolitan area includes about twice that many. There are a number of universities in the town and the student population of the city is more than 70,000. Some of the best renters insurance rates in Florida are in Tallahassee, based on the quotes we collected. Premiums were around $216 for State Farm, $238 for Esurance and $311 for our sample 1,000 square foot property in the capital.
Renters Insurance in Gainesville, FL
Gainesville has more than 124,000 residents and is home to the University of Florida. The Gainesville metropolitan area was named one of the best places to live in North America by Cities Ranked and Rated in 2007, and is known for its low cost of living. Similarly, renters insurance rates in Gainesville were some of the cheapest in Florida. Our study found that the annual renters insurance premium for our sample renter's property here was $295.
Renters Insurance in Daytona Beach, FL
Located 51 miles northeast of Orlando on the Atlantic coastline, Daytona Beach is a popular tourist destination. The nearby beaches and the Daytona International Speedway attract thousands of visitors every year. However, the city itself has more than 61,000 permanent residents and other thriving industries. Unlike major metropolitan areas south of Daytona Beach (Miami is 265 miles away) the city doesn’t face the same level of risk from tropical storms and hurricanes that others do. This is a likely contributor to cheap renters insurance. State Farm was quoted at $216, while GEICO quoted our study’s sample property premium to be $311 for a year's worth of coverage.
